"Scripps has lost one of its best. He was one of our best teachers, one of our best colleagues, one of our best friends, and one of our best musicians."
--Former Scripps Director, Charles Kennel (2000)

Michael M. Mullin Graduate Student

Fellowship in Biological Oceanography

The Michael M. Mullin Graduate Student Fellowship honors Mike's commitment to his students, his role as a mentor to many in his field, and his keen interest in, and contributions to, field-oriented oceanographic studies.

Mullin was a beloved faculty member of Scripps for 36 years. His commitment to graduate education was legendary and his contributions to Scripps unstinting. With his good humor, patience, and high ethical standards, he was often able to accomplish what others thought impossible.

Mullin's scientific research focused on the ecology of marine zooplankton, blue-water field studies, and fisheries oceanography. In addition to his laboratory and ocean-going research, Mullin further contributed to his field as editor-in-chief of the journal Fisheries Oceanography from 1997 until his untimely death in 2000.

Support for Future Leaders

Michael Mullin

Administered by the Scripps Education Department, the Mullin Fellowship Fund supports students studying biological oceanography. In addition to academic performance, recipients of the fellowship are chosen based on their interest in ocean-going research and also on their demonstrated motivation -- as evident by persistence, creativity, and their work on independent projects and/or inventions.

Since 2003, part of the income of the fund has supported student-developed research projects in biological oceanography with an emphasis on field-oriented studies. Once the near-term goal of a $250,000 endowment is reached, earnings from the Mullin Fellowship Fund will be sufficient to support a student for an academic quarter.

"The Mullin Fellowship gave me the opportunity to spend two weeks at sea aboard Scripps's largest ship, the R/V Revelle - an experience I'll never forget. It also allowed me to design and conduct my own pilot study that supplements what eventually became my dissertation. "

- Sarah Glaser, Mullin Fellowship recipient
